This month’s asskicker in the arena of metal is Lamb of God’s “Descending,” on their latest album, Sacrament. Chris Adler shows he’s serious about dropping double-bass kicks that Joey Jordison can respect. L.O.G. songs are usually around 3-4 minutes, but they’re so dynamic and powerful that you feel like they went 6-7. Randy Blythe is super-fired up to be taking on some religious themes on the album, and “Descending” is in line with the angle. If you’re attracted to metal at all, you probably grapple with religion quite a bit. Although R.B. is hardly enlightening on the subject, he is carrying the torch, and I would argue that he is to be saluted for that.
As I’m pretty ignorant about guitar work, I’ll not speak too much on it, but I do know that every member of L.O.G. is rhythmically talented–although I don’t think they collectively give TOOL any lessons… (D.C. could probably take some notes from C.A. on some footwork, but D.C. is certainly more well-rounded…)
Also check out the first track, “Walk With Me in Hell.” C.A. breaks out some sweet six-stroke rolls on his feet that are going to push budding metal drummers to raise the bar even further.

Take your iPod with you when you go grocery shopping and load up the Lamb of God. You can practically headbang the watermelon stand and no one will notice because they’re too zombified by all the pretty colors.
