A GRAVE INJUSTICE….

I’m just watching the idiot box, and this commercial comes on. It goes something like this:

“Dish Network subscribers… Court TV has been dropped from Dish Network’s programming. To correct this injustice, call 1-800-blah-blah…”

As Justin Timberlake says, “Cry me a river.”

“Injustice”? Are you serious? Some stupid channel gets dropped from a network due to the laws of supply and demand, and Court TV charges that they’ve been wronged? Sorry, baby, but that’s just the nature of the game of capitalism.

Now, it’s probably the case that Court TV doesn’t really think that they’ve been wronged. They’re playing on their viewers’ sense of “justice” and the love of Court TV. Sweeeeet.

I love hearing corporations whine. And, no, it’s not because I hate all corporations. I like many corporations. I just like hearing them whine.
I also like hearing people whine about other people liking to hear corporations whine. Hey, where’s Bill Goans?

Yeah, he’s husky. But who cares?

MSNBC reports: female Lin Hui ‘no longer comfortable’ mating with obese Chuang Chuang

Heh. This brings to mind a good ol’ George Carlin quote: “The two pandas in the zoo. Do you care if they fuck? I don’t… I’m not concerned… I have no emotional stake in panda fucking. If they want to, they will–if not, they’ll watch the ‘Price is Right.’ Probably the only reason they’re not doing it on time is that some jackoff in the environmental movement has moved into the cage with them…”

Saddam’s execution NOT a revenge killing?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070116/ap_on_go_pr_wh/bush_iraq

“It basically says to people, `Look, you conducted a trial and gave Saddam justice that he didn’t give to others. But then, when it came to execute him, it looked like it was kind of a revenge killing,’” the president said.
“It makes it harder for me to make the case to the American people that this is a government that does want to unify the country and move forward,” Bush said. “And it just goes to show that this is a government that has still got some maturation to do.”

I’m getting really tired of people wussing out on their real stance on the death penalty. If they (and by “they” I mean “we”) weren’t executing Saddam for revenge, why were we doing it? What–deterrence? “Don’t become a US-backed tyrant/mass-murderer, because we’ll hang your ass.” Bullshit. We weren’t doing it for deterrence. Would-be tyrants are not going to be worried about the gallows. Sure, Saddam was scared of being assassinated, but he wasn’t worried about going to trial and getting a death sentence when he committed all his crimes.

Shit, the main reason most people endorse the death penalty is for their sense of revenge. It’s the exercise of power that matters to them.

Bush’s comments show that he is weak. Go whole hog, damnit. Be proud, Bush. Remember that Saddam tried to kill your daddy? I bet you do.

Bush’s comments on Saddam’s execution are parallel to all the Bush supporters who scraped off the “Bush/Cheney ’04″ stickers from their car bumpers. Both reflecting backpedaling.

How to backup your iTunes library *database* automatically on your own terms.

If you’re like me, you like to keep iTunes running all the time, probably because you have your iPod hooked up to it and you are downloading podcasts regularly. There is a problem, however. If iTunes is running all the time, then your backup program cannot back up your library database–because the library is in use.

NOTE WELL: this method will not back up the music files in your library. It will only backup the database of the music library that contains your playlists, etc.
I use Syncback for backups of misc. small folders and files (not full system backups or Windows registry backups). You’ll see that I merely backup the database (the XML file, etc.) in my iTunes folder in the graphic below. I assume that you know how to configure Syncback in general. Lifehacker has a great article on how to do this here.
-

1. I downloaded and unzipped PsKill from Microsoft here. (It will work on XP Home). Then I copied PsKill into the root of my C: drive, my Windows folder, and my windows\system32 folder (because I was too lazy to figure out where it would need to go for the code in my batch file).

2. I then created a batch file that will force iTunes to close. I named it “iTunes killer.bat;” Create a batch file and copy/paste this into it:
pskill iTunes.exe

3. Then in your Syncback profile in expert mode under the “programs” tab, select iTunes killer.bat to run before the profile does. Thus the batch file will force iTunes to close before the backup profile is run. Then you can select iTunes to run after the backup is completed:syncback-medium.JPG

-

4. Then set yourself a schedule under the “misc” tab

5. Now, with iTunes running, run your new backup profile under the main Syncback window to test it. iTunes should close, the profile should run, and then iTunes should start up again. You’re all done.

The one danger is that iTunes might be updating a Podcast or something when your backup profile runs. I guess you’d have to re-download the Podcast….

ROOMBA

Bro Taguchi asks: “Does the Roomba work well on the hardwood floors?”

Let me tell you about the Roomba. When I first heard about a robotic vacuum cleaner, I was pretty skeptical. It seemed too gimmicky, too stupid or too weak. It is true that my roommate and I do not like to do chores, although we stay on top of them–most of the time, anyway. Our place is not a disaster. However, we are technology geeks, and my roommate found a “mid-range” Roomba (version 2.1?) online for around $150. So he bought it.

I will say that our hardwood floors look pretty awesome. Dust bunnies do suck, and the Roomba gets rid of those little bastards easily. It looks to me like it does a fairly good job of cleaning up surface dirt on carpet, but I have no idea how well it’s doing with deep cleaning. You could always run the regular vacuum periodically to get that deep-down dirt.

I don’t completely know how to run it, as I haven’t looked at the manual, yet. It’s supposed to be able to learn the layout of your place and work more efficiently. Dunno.
Extra perks: seeing the damn thing bump into shit and then go another direction is mildly amusing, because it looks like it’s drunk.

Extra downside: it can go and bump into shit for a while. I haven’t timed it, but it will go for over an hour. That means you should make sure you’re out of the house when it runs.

Yeah, yeah. The Roomba has been out for a while, and I’m sure that there are a million reviews of it out there. Well, here’s another.

Apple’s $600 iPhone due in June

iPhone

Well Apple has finally shown the long awaited, much speculated on, iPhone. This thing looks pretty cool and way better than most of the fakes that have been showing up over the last few months. It may be a bit expensive, or a lot expensive really (since $499 is the cheap one). Also being on Cingular may hurt it as well. If you want you can read more about it here as well as the other items Apple unveiled. I would have been a lock to buy this, but if it is only Cingular then I am out.

Here’s a nice comment I found over The Feed

” the iphone seems cool, but will it muffle out the fart sounds when i’m takin an idump? friggin’ sweet though.”
