Cindy McCain, Michelle Obama in patriotism flap

On Monday, the wife of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama told a Wisconsin audience that ‘For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country, because it feels like hope is making a comeback… not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change.’

After Tuesday’s event, the McCains were asked if the Arizona senator’s wife had been responding to that comment. Cindy McCain did not directly answer the question, responding: ‘I just wanted to make the statement that I have and always will be proud of my country.’

Cindy, let’s get real here. You’re always proud of your country??? I doubt that.

  1. It’s not as if it’s the only thing on your mind. You’re not constantly thinking about it. You might be disposed to be proud, but that doesn’t matter, because:
  2. You are surely not proud of the entire country. You are probably not proud of homeless people, radical liberals, pro-choicers, and Huckabee. So, you might be proud of your team: conservatives and your family and friends. But saying that you are proud of part of the country just doesn’t have the oomph that your exaggerated rhetoric does, does it?

Don’t give me this “I’m proud of the country” bullshit. You’re not. I’m pretty sure that you don’t know to what the term “country” refers. You might as well have said, “I’m proud of my jabberwocky.”

P.S. Everything I said might apply to Michelle. So be it.
