McCain: ‘The war will be over soon’
McCain said his potential Democratic rivals have distorted his January comment that U.S. forces may need to remain in Iraq for up to 100 years. Speaking at a campaign event in suburban Cleveland, Ohio, he said that referred to a long-term American presence similar to those in South Korea or Kuwait.
‘My friends, the war will be over soon … for all intents and purposes, although the insurgency will go on for years and years and years,’ the Arizona senator said. ‘But it will be handled by the Iraqis, not by us.’
Ok, McCain, I see what you’re doing. You’re distancing yourself from the 100-years comment NOW, so that way you have plausible deniability later, when you debate your Democratic opponent–whoever that will be.
The part that gets me, though, is that McCain claims that his 100-years comment has been distorted, so what he opts for is the far-more intelligible modifier, “soon.” What does that mean? He might as well have said, “We’re kinda leaving.”
If you can’t win with specifics, go vague….

Mike Huckabee has issued this challenge to John McCain today:

“There’s a race going on, and I wish Sen. McCain was debating me this weekend,” Huckabee said. “I wish we were gonna be in Cleveland tonight on stage or in Dallas or in Houston or San Antonio or Austin or somewhere between now and Tuesday having a debate.”
He said Republicans deserve a debate and that he was “disappointed” a forum between the remaining candidates hadn’t been planned.
“We’ve made it very clear that we would love to have,” he said, “whether it’s a debate or a forum or Q and A, where both of us are there. I think any type of format would be acceptable to us and any location would be acceptable to us.”
How about it Mr. McCain? It wouldn’t be that you are afraid to debate Huckabee under any format?
Maybe the format could even include the Democrats. That way Huckabee could help you out, which may be your only chance against them.
