Taguchi wrote this to me:

Last time I was in D-town [Taguchi and Pumpkin's home-turf], Pumpkin and I had a lip-quivering argument over nickelback. Went like this:
Gooch: Nickelback blows
Pumpkin: No they don’t
Gooch: Yes they do
Pumpkin: No they don’t. Chad Kroger is a juggernaut songwriter. Stuff like his spider man song are huge hits.
Gooch: They suck.
Pumpkin: No they don’t
I really don’t have anything to add to this. The dialogue tells you everything you need to know.

That selection of the conversation is a microcosm of what really went on. I think Nickelback has an amazing live show, prior to seeing said show, I was clowning them Creed style.
Secondly the dude, Chad Kroeger, is regarded as a great songwriter by many in the industry. The proof is in the low-fat pudding. They have hit after hit. They are probably THE biggest band of this recent era.
Lastly, the way these dudes got on the map was from hard work and strong business acumen. They essentially formed a successful “small business” and asked a “big business” to scoop up the profitable lil guy.
For the record… I am not really a fan of their music. I cannot stand Photograph and the “pants around your feet” Figured You Out song is wayyy over hyped (Freebird, Hotel California, SWEET HOME ALABAMA).
Nickelback sucks.
